A few years ago, I came across a sweet post from a grandparent who chose
experiences over presents with their grandkids — and I absolutely loved that idea. It
stuck with me.
We tried it for Richard’s mom for two years, and this year…I decided Richard needed
his own “12 Months of Christmas” too! Since we really don’t need more things in
our house, giving the gift of time, memories, and adventures together felt just right.
On Christmas morning, he opened a simple letter explaining that on the first of every
month, he’d receive a sealed envelope revealing that month’s adventure (or a few
choices!). Some envelopes include tickets, a little cash, or anything we might need for
our outing.
Here’s how it’s been going so far…
January — Fresh Starts & Good Pizza
We spent a cozy day at home cooking, chatting, and setting goals for the year. We
made a big list of things we hope to do — ambitious, fun, and maybe a little dreamy.
Then we celebrated by trying Angry Pete’s, a Detroit-style pizza spot. The square slices
and crispy crust? Chef’s kiss.
February — Mardi Gras Magic
Being a Louisiana girl living in a California world, I had to bring a little New Orleans to
our month! We had King Cake delivered (shoutout to my sister Tammy ), with another
arriving on Mardi Gras day. We also enjoyed a meal at Bud’s Louisiana Café, my go-to
when I’m missing Cajun flavors and a taste of home.

For me, this year isn’t about checking boxes, it’s about showing up, slowing down,
and making memories together. Some activities are favorites we already love, and
others are brand-new adventures.
Follow along for more of our monthly surprises… there’s so much fun still to come!
Have you ever done something like this for your spouse, partner, kids, or grandkids?
I’d love to hear your favorite ideas!
