Goals - Kindness

40 Days. 40 Donations.

If you’re a native of New Orleans like I am, you know that the day after Mardi Gras feels different. The beads are put away, the king cake is gone, and just like that… Lent begins.

Even though I didn’t grow up in the Catholic church, Lent was always part of the rhythm of my community. Friends would give up candy, bread, soda — and as we got older, maybe wine or coffee. I usually joined in just to support them. There’s something powerful about doing something together.

But the last two years, I’ve found something I love even more:

40 Days. 40 Donations.

I’m not even sure where I first heard the idea, but whoever you are, thank you. It completely changed how I approach this season.

Instead of focusing on what I’m giving up, I focus on what I can give away.

This year, I skipped the neat little donation box and grabbed a big white garbage bag. Honestly? I’m hoping to fill more than one. The goal is at least 40 items over the 40 days of Lent, but if it turns into 80, even better.

Here’s the beauty of it:
It doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

You don’t need an all-day purge session.
You don’t need a perfectly organized plan.

Set a timer for 15 minutes.

Open a closet.
Pull out a dresser drawer.
Tackle one kitchen cabinet.
Check the hall closet.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I wear this?
  • Do I use this?
  • Does someone else need this more than I do?

That sweater you forgot about?
Those extra coffee mugs?
The duplicate serving tray?

Someone can use them.

What I love most about this idea is that it feels lighter, in every way. Lighter in my home. Lighter in my heart. And it quietly shifts the focus outward.

Forty days pass whether we do something intentional with them or not. Why not let those days create space in your home and bless someone else at the same time?

So grab a bag.
Set a timer.
Start small.

Happy donating.
